Lyman-Morse 46' Performance Cruising Yacht
Boat Names: N/AIn 2018 we got together with Cabot Lyman from the East Coast USA yard Lyman-Morse to look at putting together a new semi-production yacht that that would appeal to the modern sailor whilst still having that ‘soul’ aspect that only a wooden yacht can achieve.
Lyman and Dibley believe that the modern production yachts coming out of the various European and American yards have lost that individual magic that perhaps only a semi-production timber yacht could achieve.
Lyman and Dibley were introduced to each other by expat Kiwi Chris Bouzaid years ago when Cabot stopped into New Zealand on his world circumnavigation voyage.
Lyman-Morse have been boatbuilding on the east coast of the USA for over 40 years and are one of the most well established and trusted yards for semi production projects.
The company is owned by Cabot Lyman but his son, Drew Lyman is the President and they have brought together a very slick and dedicated team of builders, project managers, brokers and in-house designers to deal with any project that comes their way.
When talking to Cabot about what he envisaged with a new 46-footer, we also liaised with a cross section of other sailors in the industry including Chris Bouzaid, Roy Dickson, Penny Whiting and Eric Urbahn who all added their thoughts into the mix.
The yacht had to be simple, but performance orientated and have the power to deal with both the lighter airs found on the east coast as well as being offshore capable for races such as the Newport Bermuda Race.
The hull would be cold-moulded construction but with the use of in-house CNC machines and a combination of modern materials such as carbon in critical areas of load, the yacht will be stiff and fast, with timber details that will make her stand out from the crowd.
The interior will be open and light with the warmth of timber and fabrics to add to the large amount of light let in via the large windows, hatches and skylights. The layout shown has a large double cabin forward with shower and head, a spacious salon and dining area with single pilot berths outboard to port and starboard.
A large galley to starboard and Nav Station to port ending with a double berth aft to port under the cockpit. We brought in New Zealand interior designer Donna Maree to help the interior pop and we believe she has done an amazing job considering the brief to keep it simple and easy.
To allow the timber hull sides to show through, we stripped away all cabinetry 3 feet above the cabin sole and Donna added in her own touches with a ‘floating’ galley and nifty duffle bag storage options using carbon ‘pipe berth’ type storage.
The deck and sail plan are easy to handle short-handed and we have options for a racing keel and rudder to go with a square top main rig for those that want to race this yacht harder than the family or club racer.
The cockpit is ideal for entertaining and the hinged transom opens the cockpit further when at anchor but is closed when sailing for added safety and comfort for the younger crew members learning the joys of keelboat racing/ cruising.
