Dibley LM46 review

The LM46 - a new high-performance bespoke sailing yacht.

"When Cabot [Lyman] circumnavigated with his family back in the 80s aboard the Seguin 49 Chewink, I met him briefly when he stopped in New Zealand. Drew was still of school age, but the New Zealand yachting fraternity is quite small, and everyone knows each other one way or other. The Lidgard, Bouzaid, and Whiting families made the introductions. That just started my design company and was based in Westhaven Marina, where all the international cruisers would sail into at one point or other."

"Collaborating with Lyman-Morse is different than partnering with other boatbuilders. They are a one-stop-shop and do everything in-house, which makes it easier as a designer, as you don't need to outsource various parts of the design/build like other companies do."

"However, every commission is different. We design everything from racing and cruising yachts and power boats to
Olympic rowing skifts. There is nothing we won't look at and this broad spectrum requires a lot of knowledge from various sources. As a one-man band.

Working with Kevin Dibley on the design of the LM46 is just another example on how Lyman-Morse goes beyond to achieve its goals. in this case, to New Zealand to reconnect with an old friend and a prolific yacht designer:

I can't be an expert in everything, so I have a network of professionals I pull in when required, and this allows me to be flexible in the various design projects I take on. These professionals, specialists in their trade, could be sailmakers, spar makers, structural engineers, and having this resource of talent allows me to cater to my clients in a way that larger design firms would struggle to do. With Lyman-Morse, all these specialists are in-house, which really makes the design process easy on my end."

"With regards to the
LM46-we were approached by Cabot, who was looking for a design that is a performance yacht, but with "soul," and had specific design features that were not catered to in other existing designs. Kiwi Chris Bouzaid, whom I've known for decades and is based now in Rhode Island, suggested Cabot and I get together to see what could be achieved."

"
Cabot was fairly firm that he wanted a yacht that would sail or power at 10 knots, and be easy for families to escape on, but also easy to step off minutes after picking up the mooring. Minimal draft was important for Bahamas cruising, and a short rig was important for inland waterways, allowing the boat to pass under most of the bridges."

"The challenge for me was to have those aspects of the design, but still be performance oriented. The squaretop mainsail approach was an elegant solution that allowed the horsepower to be there for sailing performance but also kept the overall height low. The cockpit and interior layouts had to have flow and be ergonomically workable for large and small families. The overall layout is very Kiwi oriented as most NZ sailors spend as much time in the cockpit as they do down below. It seemed like the perfect fit for
Cabot and Drew's brief as well."

"When you step below, the first thing you see is the timber inner skin of the hull sides. It gives a warmth that isn't there in a modem build. It also makes the yacht very quiet acoustically. We offered various layouts to cater to the needs of the owners who required different outcomes."

Hopgrasser's interior, for instance, is different to Arcadia's. I had the pleasure to sail in the Newport Bermuda Race onboard Arcadia such a pleasure to sail. Easy shorthanded or fully crewed. Her owner, Eliot Merrill, put together a great crew and she really performed well.

"When you look at the brief, and see the finished result, and the smile on the faces of the owners, it doesn't get better than that."

The
LM46, a high-performance bespoke sailing yacht, provides owners with a low-maintenance. cold-molded hull that pairs the unmatched comfortable motion and ambiance of a wooden boat with the 10-knot-plus speeds typically found on a modern performance yacht. Partnering with longtime friend and acclaimed Kiwi yacht designer Kevin Dibley, Lyman-Morse builds the LM46 for the pure joy of sailing this is a platform that allows you to connect with friends and family and enjoy a great day on the water. The goal with the LM46 was simple enjoyment-she's designed to have you sailing within five minutes of stepping aboard, and ready to head ashore within five minutes of picking up your mooring.
